I’ve been a monk and meditation teacher for nearly 23 years.
It’s the one stat I’m truly proud of, the one thing I’ve stuck with.
I didn’t do it to hide from the world.
I did it to engage with it completely.
I wanted maximum experience, maximum humanity.
To truly understand what it’s like to be a fully realised human being –
To see if suffering is indeed optional.
First I looked externally. I threw away a traditional career route to be an outdoor instructor, mainly so I could easily chase the next thing.
I found a ton of big experiences there: fear, discomfort, even despair, but I also found courage, belonging, highs beyond highs, deep satisfaction.
I had everything on my wish list – adventure, freedom, lasting, cool experiences.
But ultimately it was a donut –
Looked great, but felt completely empty in the middle.
I was in the most beautiful places on Earth, yet my mind was still somewhere else.
I had the life I thought I wanted, but I was still searching:
"Is this really it?"
That search took me to some wild places in the spiritual landscape, but ultimately to my Ishaya teacher.
He showed me that Maximum Humanity requires two things:
1. Taking Care of Business: Making a life you love, taking care of people, doing the cool stuff.
2. The Inner Dimension: Aligning with an inner unshakable sense of rightness.
The inner feeds the outer.
You'll know when you don’t have that connection.
You’re scrambling, over-thinking, and compromising your authenticity.
You’re reactive, so focused on what’s wrong that you can’t enjoy the life you worked so hard to build.
It’s not fun anymore – and you know you’re out of whack:
That inner voice will let you know about it louder and louder.
Take the invitation.
No more donuts.
The world is mad and constantly shifting, but there is a steady point in the middle of it all.
The habit is to look for it outside of yourself, or in the past or the future, but the power source for a satisfying life is already right here, within you.
You don’t have to give up your good life, and it doesn't take decades to find …
But it’s such a luxury to have contact with, you want more. It’s like an inner well that means life becomes sweeter the more you visit it.
Now –
It does take practice.
A spa getaway or an ayahuasca retreat can be helpful, but they aren't a substitute for forging a lasting connection that survives your old habits.
Know that. Remembering takes repetition of the right things.
Strangely, this isn't for everyone. Some people are fine with pretty good.
But some of us want everything – complete freedom, joy, and unbounded connection. Maximum life in our moments.
