Bad Guys Under the Duvet

As I was putting Zach (5) to bed last night, he told me he was scared of Bad Guys.

He had his head completely under his duvet – no light, no air, attempting to create an air-tight shelter where the Bad Guys couldn't get in.

The trouble was, they were already in ... in his mind.

I remember that feeling well: trying to create an airlock of self-protection. But by ruminating on the fear, it only grew. I’d tighten down on my sanctuary, but the fear multiplied in proportion to the effort I put into fending it off. Plus, I always ran out of air.

As adults, we often do a version of this.

There are two options: stay hidden under the emotional shutters, only sticking our head out for a quick, anxious breath; or trust that in this moment, we are safe enough to breathe freely and rest – that we don't need to shrink away.

I told Zach he has a superpower called love, and he'd be best placed by putting his faith in that. I mean it.

The world will offer you many things to fear, but it will also give you many things to love.

Fear, if you feed it, will make your world shrink; we suffocate. Love does the direct opposite.

Dr. Martin Luther King was right on the money when he said, “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.” Swap out hate for fear and the truth remains: Lighten your load so you can do the things you were put here to do.

The practice of lightening the load, if you choose to accept it, is to cultivate the faith to let go and trust. This is the core of being present: letting go of the ‘what ifs’ for an absolute dedication to ‘what is’.

Despite the evidence of your past and your many projected maybes – and I say this with great compassion and understanding – love, peace, and your internal state are a superpower. But it’s not a superpower that is a given. It is a choice that you must protect and grow.

Here you’ll find your true sanctuary. Here you can breathe easy. Here is where you create light in any darkness.

Nurture your superpower.

And if I can help with that, I would love to. Just get in touch.

Go well,

Arjuna
